Asia- Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Small Business Activities in Big Sky: What’s in it for APEC small businesses?

 

On May 13-20, 2011, at the Big Sky Resort in Montana, the United States will host several workshops and events specifically for small-and-medium size enterprises (SMEs) from across the Asia-Pacific region and the government policymakers that support them. Opportunities will abound to participate as speakers in the events below to contribute to informally network with Ministers and SMEs from across APEC. The United States welcomes at least three SMEs from each APEC economy to participate in, or lead discussion in the following events:

Friday, May 13

-SME Seminar on “internationalization”: Learn how APEC economy policymakers are helping small businesses develop export capabilities.

 

Saturday, May 14

-Seminar on Business Ethics and the Global Supply Chain: Learn from major multinational companies about ethical requirements for their SME suppliers and agents, and how to remain competitive through improved compliance efforts.

-Seminar on improving SME Competitiveness through Sustainable Business Practices” Experts from the University of Pennsylvania’s Lauder Institute, Spain’s Banca Civica, and others will discuss approaches to improving SME sustainability.

 

Sunday, May 15

-Seminar on Business Ethics for APEC SMEs in the Construction Industry” Learn from construction experts about innovative practices and tools used to ensure a level playing field for SMEs as subcontractors in major infrastructure projects.

-Seminar on Business Ethics for APEC SMEs in Auditing and Certification: Learn the latest trends from ethics and compliance experts about the benefits and costs of ethics compliance and how to achieve affordable compliance through assessments, auditing, and certification.

-Seminar on How to Grow Your Green Small Business in APEC Economies: Hear success stories from green small business leaders, followed by Q&A sessions. Panel 1 will cover functional issues including finance, regulation and trade promotion. Panel 2 will cover challenges and opportunities in APEC economies. Panel 3 will cover specific sectors such as clean energy and green building

-Networking Reception for “How to Grow Your Green Small Business” Workshop Delegates: Network with government officials and other APEC member economy SMEs.

Wednesday, May 18

-Shaping the Agenda: Enhance SME Competitiveness through Clean Growth: A forum consisting of three high level plenary discussion panels that highlight public policies, business innovations, and public private partnerships supporting the development of clean technologies for SMEs in APEC economies. These plenary panels will highlight the importance of an open market agenda.

-Welcome Reception: A networking reception for all APEC delegates in Big Sky.

 

Thursday, May 19

-APEC SME Clean Competitiveness Facility Tour: An educational green facility tour in Bozeman will demonstrate the ways a company can implement resource-efficient practices in their operations to become more sustainable and competitive. Learn about the various tools and resources available to SMEs in the APEC region and how U.S. policies and programs have helped U.S. companies improve their sustainability.
